  • What a frightening ordeal! I’ve met a few people who say they have adopted a gluten-free diet but none with a compelling story like that. I’m so inspired by your journey.

  • G. Hubbard, thank you for reading my story! Indeed, it was a frightening ordeal! However, keeping my focus on God and His power enabled me to feel peace in the midst of my difficult circumstances! Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of my favorite scriptures. Always lean on Him, not your understanding! Wishing you a healthy and happy new year!

  • Sherry I am so glad you didn’t give up. You are such a beautiful person inside and out. You trusted in the Lord and he guided you through the storm. Wishing you nothing but good health.

    • Sheila, thank you for reading my story! I appreciate your kind thoughts! As a faith-centered woman, you know that trusting in the Lord is the key to getting through ANY storm! Wishing you a healthy and happy new year!

  • What a great story of how perseverance will see you through. I am glad that you were your own advocate and took your health in your own hands. Your journey is admirable and will encourage others to press on. Gluten intolerance is real!

  • LaVon, thank you for your kind comments! Indeed, it is important to be our own advocate when the doctors are not fully listening to our concerns. We know our bodies better than anyone, but many times we are afraid to ask the necessary questions. Indeed, perseverance with faith and God’s wisdom will see one through! Many special blessings to you in 2018 and always!

  • Wow Sherry!!! Talking about overcoming obstacles…Your faith in God leaves me in awe. Your steadfastness and will to live is just incredible to read!!! It is inspiring to see you take your physical and spiritual so seriously, and how God guided you through his word. • Thank you Stephanie for your kindhearted comments and encouragement! Indeed, there is so much more to my story. However, I am thankful to Melony Brown for her wonderful storytelling ability to capture the very essence of my journey in such a thoughtful way! Yes, God is the anchor of my life! His word (Jeremiah 29:11) tells me HE KNOWS the plans HE has for me, not man! Therefore, we must NEVER give up! Many amazing blessings are in store for you in 2018!

  • God is a great and an awesome god !!
Sherry you’re an awesome person to strive and press on to find out what your diagnosis was. I think it is so sad when Dr’s can’t be more consistent to help people with pain to find out what could be the problem. I’m glad God gave you the strength and knowledge to continue to persevere and not give up. It’s very nice of you to want to share the experience with others about gluten free products. And I pray that you will be able to share on the web with others. Thanks for sharing.

  • Sheryl…. Amen! God is great and awesome and faithful! Thank you for your encouraging comments! All praise to God for the perseverance and wisdom He gave me! Unfortunately, doctors don’t always know how to handle food allergies and many find it hard to believe the allergies even exist. In most doctor’s eyes, skin problems must be eczema. The severe “eczema” I was diagnosed with was baffling to the doctors because I never had eczema as a child. But, they did not dig deeper! They just prescribed more steroids and topical creams! This is why it is important for me to share my journey to gluten free! Much love, good health and many special blessings to you in 2018!

  • Sherry – you are a true fighter. Prayer, faith and preserverance are key to your strength. Encourage others to not give up!

    Continue Blessings for Good Health!

  • Bea Mac…thank you for reading my story. I appreciate your encouraging words! Indeed, I will continue to encourage others to persevere in faith.

“Life with God is not immunity from difficulties but peace in difficulties.” C. S. Lewis

Wishing you good health and happiness Bea Mac today and always!!

  • Wow! God has brought you through a lot. You are most definitely a walking miracle. To God be the glory. God has allowed you to go through this situation to be a blessing to others. You are going to be successful. Your story is going to reach the world.

    • Veronica……..Yesssssszzz…to God be the glory! As you know, we serve a mighty and faithful God! Thank you for your encouraging words! Indeed, “the Lord made His face shine upon me and He was gracious to me.” Numbers 6:25

Wishing you God’s abundant blessings, including good health, joy, peace, wealth, and happiness!

  • Dear Sherry, thank you for sharing your story. Trusting the Lord and your dedication to finding the real solution for your illness, really pays for sure. Your story can help a lot of people who do not know why they are suffering like that and nobody can help them. You are an amazing person.
    God bless you!

    • Fifi……thank you for taking time to read the story of my health journey. Thank you for your encouraging words! All glory goes to God for He gave me the strength to fight through with Him!
Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

May God bless you today and always!

  • Thank you for sharing your Journey through your Illnesses and into your recovery..

  • What a lot to go through. So happy they are both doing well, still together, and have God in their lives.

  • Wanda, you are a walking testimony to how God will never leave us during difficulties if we cry out to Him and remain in His word. What a great God we serve who had you physically ready to take on your fight and to have your husband so able to encourage you and lift you up on your journey. Seeing God’s hand work is such a blessing. Thank you for sharing your story.

  • Thank you for sharing your story, I’ve know so many with throat cancer and your story is light to all who are suffering from this or any other ailment in life! thank you for your positive attitude and showing the world you don’t have to be bitter! Big Hugs!

  • Having witnessed the misery that she endured first hand-her ability to stay focused was like nothing I have ever seen. My mother in law is a FIGHTER. A FIGHTER from the beginning. A young mother, a single mother, a grieving mother, my mother. I have so much respect for this woman. Not only because she raised the amazing man that is my husband-and I feel such a debt of gratitude now that I am raising a young man myself! Growing a man is not easy! She has never ceased to be there for me and Shane and especially our children. A strong Nana that loves fiercely.

I say often that I have not done much well in life but I married well and THAT has made all the difference. My mother in law is a large aspect of that.

  • Wanda, you are such a strong example for a Godly woman. Scott and I were very close to Shane and Shanon during the tragic time of Brian’s death. I am so glad to still call them friends. You have been a pillar of a matriarch for your family and should be very proud of all of them!

  • Wanda, your story inspired me and I thank you for sharing it with us. I am so happy for you and your husband that you have healing and faith in God!!!

  • Hi Wanda!
I loved meeting you Sat at our Overcomer Celebration and felt an immediate bond!!!
I wanted to share with you that since I have been taking Precept Bible classes, I learned to do word studies by looking up Hebrew meanings for Old Testament words and Greek for New Testament words. After reading your story and knowing your love for the song “Still” that you shared I thought you would like to know something from my testimony back in 2008, while on a mission trip to Moldova. I fell over there in the poorest country in Eastern Europe, broke my ankle in 3 places…..fast forward while on the ground there God brought to my mind Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God. Hebrew of the word still means Rapha …Jehohvah Rapha is our Great Physician….only place in the bible where this is the meaning of still. ca Take care, Ann

  • So much to endure… But what an awesome God we have. Our ultimate physician that heals and restores. So happy for you and thankful you shared your story.

  • I was so happy to meet you at the overcomers event, it was God’s work putting you in my path, I was sharing your story today at a prayer circle we had for the young man I mentioned to you. He has been moved to Shepherds and we are still hoping for a miracle. Your faith and strength and determination had a huge impact on me, and I wanted to actually read your story that Melony did on you, I’m glad I did, God bless you,

  • Life is not about quitting. Rather it is about keeping the promise. Here, in the following, I would like to reveal the reasons why the person should not quit at whatever it is he is performing.
1)Quitting will close all the possible ways. So, keep trying- eventually, you will get it.
2)By never giving up, you can get a chance to face your fears.
3)You can find your inner strength and encourage optimism.
4)You can procure the definition of yourself.
That’s all I want to unearth. Great post! Keep sharing 🙂

  • Love this and Ruby! Thank you for always sharing your story, Nicole… in your own words and now through Melony.

  • I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and if I could plan my perfect practice it would be an office that only saw Down’s babies and children. They are my favorite and I fully believe that they are a glimpse of heaven sent down by our Father. They are innocent, honest, loving and kind souls. I hate that these kiddos have an increased risk of leukemia but if there is one positive thing (if that’s even possible with the ‘C’) it would be that they take it in stride and never stop smiling no matter how sick they are. We could all learn from them. I enjoyed watching Ruby run around at the Overcomers Luncheon. 🙂

  • Beautiful story, beautifully written. We love Ruby and her amazing family!

  • Ruby is the cutest and most precious little girl. She is so full of life and happiness. I certainly hope she does not continue to have medical issues. Melony has written a very descriptive article of her and the love that her family has for her.

  • God knew exactly what He was doing when He gave Ruby to Lehr, Nicole, Eli & Maddie. He knew she needed a lot of love and He knew that there was a lot of love to give to beautiful, joyful Ruby from her very specially selected family. God has a plan & when we let Him “do His thing” it all has a way of working out. Good job God !!!!!

  • Love getting to spend time with Ruby and all of the Eliason’s! She loves my kids and they can’t get enough of her…. even if she does steal Suttons pacifier ?

  • What a beautiful family!

  • God Bless You Laura for your courage and encouragement to others. You are an overcomer!

  • Thank you Maureen. I am kicking butt, doing everything I did before the disease.

  • Beautiful and powerful article about my dear friend, Laura. All that know her can attest to her courage, humor, determination, grace , and capacity to love. Oh, and, she’s also gorgeous. She and René are two of the kindest people I’ve had the great good fortune to know. Wonderful piece, Melony, thank you for sharing. Gini

  • Everyone my age worries about getting this horrible disease. Laura is certainly approaching it in a very constructive way. I think she is looking at it very optimistically. I hope she will have many more good years before the disease progresses.

  • I hope everyone meets someone like Laura sometime in his or her life. She’s facing this challenge with the same tenacity and good humor as she did during her successful athletic career in high school and college. She showed a great mix of competition and sportsmanship on her many teams, and inspired her teammates.
Kudos also to Rene: she’s a rock. I’m lucky to know both of these wonderful women!

  • You are an awesome and amazing lady. Love you!

  • My admiration continues to grow for you Laura, keep up the good fight and know that you are loved.

  • Thank you Melony for your beautifully written article about Laura. Your words eloquently captured the true essence of Laura’s spirit and resilience.

  • Laura, I have always loved you and considered you a close and dear friend. You are truly an inspiration to all of us who are privileged enough to know you and to be the recipient of your love, laughter, intelligence, wisdom, and compassion (not to mention your drop-dead, gorgeous looks). You are one of a kind, Schwag…my hero. Rene, what a hero you are, too.

Melony Brown, once again, your words have conveyed such an accurate and riveting reflection of an overcomer’s story. You continue to amaze me with your life, faith, and ability to touch so many in such an impactful way. I think you are the written word’s best friend.

  • Laura, as I read the article about your fight I was thinking about how your approach to this disease mimics your approach to sports. Whether as a coach or as a player, when the game isn’t going your way, you make adjustments. Some are very small and some are major. Alzheimer’s isn’t any sort of game, but your approach is that of a champion!

  • Thank you for sharing, you’ve GOT THIS!!

  • Keep on kickin’ butt Laura! You are an inspiration with your courage and grace!

  • Laura my dear friend I cannot express enough of how proud I am of you. The challenges you face everyday are enough to cripple most people yet your courageous attitude and desire to live forges through. I am so grateful you have Rene. Her love and optimism combined with keeping your lives organized and moving forward is a testament to your devotion to one another. I simply love you friend and wish this would just go away. Knowing you handle it with such grace makes you even more beautiful!! I continue to pray for your healing everyday. You are loved my dear friend. I am so blessed to have you in my life!! Great article. An inspiration to many who struggle. Live, love and laugh! You do it all!!!

  • Laura, you have always been an inspiration and joy to those of us lucky enough to share the love and laughter with you! So grateful and proud! Love you to the moon and back!

  • I love my Aunt very much and I am so proud of her and how she is not letting this disease consume her and her life. Watching my Nana suffering from this disease was heartbreaking and now seeing what is available now is priceless. Rene, you are the best and I am so glad you are a part of our family. Love you Aunt Laurie and Rene.

  • My dear, dear friend I love and admire you so much. We are truly sisters and I will always be there for you thru this disease. You are one of the strongest people I know, and still have all that feistiness about you that I so love. Rene’, what a wonderful gift you are for Laura at this time.
I love and cherish you both, my dear friends. Remember, I will always be here for the both of you
    Strong and courageous women.

  • Wonderful article!!! Thank you Melony!
God Bless You, Laura! I don’t know of anyone who would have handled this diagnosis with such grace, courage,
strength and humor! You are beyond remarkable in my eyes, and every time I see you, my heart aches….but in
a good way…..like when you used to see your Mom for the 1st time after being away at camp all summer. I love you Laurie….keep up the good work! And God Bless You, Rene’for your unconditional love and devotion ❤

  • Laura, it was such a joy to share dinner with you,Rene, Carole, M’er, Jude, And Donna. It was as if we were at AHS in the 70’s. You exude confidence, strength and joy just being Schawagy! I saw no hint of the symptoms listed above. Your laughter and storytelling about your basketball skills were wonderful! I remember competing against you when I played for A M. You are so blessed to have Rene! She is a strong and positive partner in your life. You are blessed to have each other. I hope you two can make it back to Lou. In the not too distant future. Remember that laughter produces natural pain-killers in the body! I pray that you laugh long and often and are overflowing with endorphins? Love ya! Snooks?

  • Laura, I had no idea. You are blessed to have Rene in your life. Looks like you are Keeping your positivity and laughter strong. What courage you have to post your interview so we all can learn more about the disease. Much love to you and Rene.❤

  • You are again an overachiever! ??
Great visit we had – you are the drug tester for the future of thousands that come after you Think about it- could be one of us writing about our love and admiration!

  • What a wonderful interview that spotlights so many of your amazing qualities. Of course, the one that stuck out for me is your stubbornness. LOL It serves you well. You and Rene are tenacious foes fighting this disease. My money is on the two of you. Hugs!

  • What a beautifully written article about a beautiful woman. She is and will be an over comer, no matter the outcome. She is blessed to have a large, loving family and Rene at her side. Her mother never lost her sense of humor and grace, and I know Laurie will be the same. I love and admire you Laura

Thank you for sharing your worst moments so that others don’t have to feel alone and realize there is another way! Hard work does pay off and we learn so much from our adversities. Your faith and determination have made you who you are today and you will still keep growing and learning! I have had the pleasure to actually work with this young talented lady and when she first shared her story with me I had no idea she had been through so much because she is a beautiful person on the outside and the inside. We shared stories of our faith and troubles and have created a beautiful friendship! She has come so far and to personally know this woman is truly a blessing! Her smile will make you smile!

  • I found this blog to be one of great hope, that a person CAN overcome!!! love it

  • I know several people that have been anorexic or are still that way. It’s a hard and sad life for them. I hope you are on your way to complete recovery.
